rule5bot is a Reddit app that enforces a screenshot-explanation rule (named after r/paradoxplaza's famous "Rule 5"): image posts must come with an explanatory comment from the author.
Install from the Reddit App Directory
- A new screenshot, gallery, or (optionally) video post is detected the moment it is submitted.
- After a grace period, the author gets a friendly warning comment.
- Still no explanation after a second grace period? The post is removed — or only reported to the modqueue, if the moderators prefer.
- The moment the author adds an explanation, the warning disappears. Removed posts are re-approved automatically via modmail (or instantly on comment, if enabled).
Fully configurable per subreddit
Every knob is in the app's settings page, per community: grace periods, detection patterns, gallery/video coverage, exempt users and flairs, remove vs. report-only mode, the rule's own name and rules link, and every message template. Explanations written in the post body can be accepted too — and echoed as a comment for old-Reddit users, where image-post bodies are invisible.

Open, boring, and safe
- Processes only public Reddit content on subreddits where moderators installed it.
- Never removes without warning first — even after downtime, thanks to a maximum enforcement age.
- Backs off automatically when a human moderator approves or removes a post.
